BRIDGEWATER — Ever since a few longtime officials came up with the idea to create the showcase about 13 years ago, the Coaches Cup has consistently delivered some of the best lacrosse action in the Commonwealth, if not New England. On Thursday, the tournament resumed, and it now appears a few familiar schools will vie for the championship this upcoming weekend following its events.Senior captain Ryan Berkel finished with a hat trick to go with three assists, while classmate Van Tanguay added a trio of goals, as Lincoln-Sudbury clinched its second straight trip to the Coaches Cup title game with a convincing 12-6 victory over Wellesley at Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School.Wellesley (4-1) entered the semifinals with a perfect record, looking to make a statement against a perennial heavyweight. For much of the first half, it appeared as though Lincoln-Sudbury (5-1) was going to be in a dogfight with the upstart Bay State Conference squad. Then, as they have so often done in the pa...

Deep O’Bryant boys volleyball team sweeps by Lincoln-Sudbury

ROXBURY — If there are two things that are most consistent with the O’Bryant boys volleyball team early on this season, it’s the Tigers’ strong play when closing out a set; and that senior setter Son Nguyen will get the right characters going for the team’s best chance at winning. Both showed in full form Thursday afternoon, as Nguyen dished out 28 assists to help No. 5 O’Bryant (7-1) overcome a resilient No. 20 Lincoln-Sudbury team for a 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-17) nonleague win. Not one player accrued double-digit kills, as Nguyen spread the wealth beyond typical premier hitter Jonathan Narsjo, who couldn’t get going until the final set against the Warriors’ blockers. That distribution coupled nicely with the group’s 11 aces, which it used for the final point in two separate sets to hold off some vicious Lincoln-Sudbury rallies.“That, I really love about our boys. Closing plays, we are winning,” said O’Bryant head coach Paul Pitts-Dilley. “When we are playing our game, we’re playing g...

Transgender lawmaker silenced by Montana House speaker

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana’s House speaker on Thursday refused to allow a transgender lawmaker to speak about bills on the House floor until she apologizes for saying lawmakers would have “blood on their hands” if they supported a bill to ban gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth, the lawmaker said.Rep. Zooey Zephyr, who was deliberately misgendered by a conservative group of lawmakers demanding her censure after Tuesday’s comments, said she will not apologize, creating a standoff between the first-term state lawmaker and Republican legislative leaders.Speaker Matt Regier refused to acknowledge Zephyr on Thursday when she wanted to comment on a bill seeking to put a binary definition of male and female into state code.“It is up to me to maintain decorum here on the House floor, to protect the dignity and integrity,” Regier said Thursday. “And any representative that I don’t feel can do that will not be recognized.”Regier said the decision came after “mult...

Prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents Thompson’s family, called for those responsible for his death to be held accountable.“What you’re looking at, I think, is not just a deplorable jail cell, but this is a crime scene. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas’ Democratic governor on Thursday vetoed a sweeping set of anti-transgender measures, including a ban on gender-affirming care for children and teens, but Republican lawmakers who pushed them appeared to have the votes to override most of her actions. Gov. Laura Kelly rejected restrictions for transgender people in using restrooms, locker rooms and other public facilities; limits on where they are housed in state prisons and county jails; and even restrictions on rooming arrangements for transgender youth on overnight school trips. Her actions highlighted how her Republican-leaning state has become a fiercely contested battleground as GOP lawmakers across the U.S. target LGBTQ+ rights through several hundred proposals. Kelly narrowly won reelection in November, but the the Legislature has GOP supermajorities and conservative leaders who’ve made rolling back transgender rights a priority. The measures on bathrooms, jails and overnight school trips passe...
