Denver Health, rural Colorado hospitals that needed cash infusions are working toward financial recovery Three Colorado hospitals that faced severe cash crunches in the last year are getting closer to financial recovery, but still need to make changes to be sustainable in the long term. Two of the hospitals are small rural facilities: St. Vincent Health in Leadville and Delta Health on the Western Slope. The third, Denver Health, is the city’s urban safety-net facility treating large numbers of uninsured people. All three received significant cash infusions to tide them over. The state legislature made a $5 million emergency appropriation in February to help stabilize Denver Health, which had seen its uncompensated care costs double since 2020 and lost more than $31 million on patient care in 2022. CEO Donna Lynne said the hospital was down to about 75 days’ worth of cash on hand, when a comfortable cushion would be about six months’ worth.Days cash on hand essentially refers to how long a hospital could cover its normal expenses if no reimbursement came in. One of the primary reasons: The Rams offensive line is giving quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi time to throw. Through three games, the Rams have allowed just five sacks total, only one of which came in last week’s win over Middle Tennessee State. A year ago, the Rams had allowed five sacks before their first game was even finished.Air Raid, Part II: The end result of that protection? Fowler-Nicolosi is picking defenses apart. Through two starts, the redshirt freshman has thrown for 688 yards and five touchdowns, cementing himself as CSU’s starter. Fowler-Nicolosi is spreading the ball around, too. Now it’s time to see what sort of gusto CU really has against a USC program that’s owned CU. If the Buffs come out and get embarrassed again, the rest of the Pac-12 schedule will seem twice as daunting. Time for CU to answer the bell.Buffs’ non-existent run game: CU had 55 net rushing yards against TCU, 58 against Nebraska, 70 against CSU and 40 against Oregon. That equates to only 55.8 yards per game, which is making the CU offense one-dimensional, and, in turn, making quarterback Shedeur Sanders’ job twice as difficult. Unless CU can start to establish some ground-and-po...

BOULDER — Who needs Will Ferrell when you’ve got Lil Wayne and Ralphie?A year ago at this time, the home sideline at Folsom Field was radioactive. Now it’s the new Crypto.com Arena, the sporting venue where stars — we’re talking A-list dudes: The Rock, Master P, Offset, Terrell Owens — want to be seen.“That doesn’t happen anywhere, for real, unless you’re in Los Angeles and you’re winning,” LenDale White, former Broncos running back, USC star and Chatfield High state champ told me a few days ago. “Bama? People don’t stop there (unless) you’re winning. (Then) people want to be a part of that.“But for people to already be at CU and seeing that excitement already. I haven’t seen that effect in college football. Broncos Journal: Cornerback Damarri Mathis has a plan to overcome his early season struggles: “Play with swag” Damarri Mathis is no stranger to slow starts. As a rookie, he drew four defensive pass interference penalties in his first career start Week 6 at the Los Angeles Chargers. Now a second-year player, Mathis has struggled out of the gates as the Broncos’ starting cornerback opposite Pat Surtain II.Playing across from Surtain, who most quarterbacks tend to avoid from the start, is not easy duty by any stretch. But Mathis has been picked on. Las Vegas did it with Jakobi Meyers while Surtain put down a quietly ridiculous performance against All-Pro Davante Adams. Then Washington worked to get Terry McLaurin matched up with Mathis, too.Sunday against Miami, well, pretty much everybody struggled.Mathis, the former Pitt standout, is most comfortable in man coverage and still learning the nuances of NFL defensive systems. He’s shown he can be a physical tackler, but has missed his share — it’s been a common theme for Denver’s defense in general — so far through three games.Mathis told The Post t...
