The Mega Millions jackpot climbed to an estimated $910 million after Tuesday night’s drawing produced no big winners, extending a stretch of bad luck dating back to April. The numbers drawn were: 3, 5, 6, 44, 61 and the yellow ball 25The absence of a winner for the estimated $820 million jackpot brings the count of fruitless drawings to 28, at least for the big prize. The new $910 million prize is among the largest in U.S. lottery history and follows a $1.08 billion Powerball prize won by a player July 19 in Los Angeles. California lottery officials haven’t announced a winner for that jackpot, which was the sixth-largest in U.S. history. The largest U.S. jackpot was a $2.04 billion Powerball prize won in November 2022.Jackpots in the two lottery games grow so large because the steep odds make winning so unlikely, allowing the grand prize to roll over again and again. ‘Our own front line’: Ukrainian surgeons see wave of wounded soldiers since counteroffensive began

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:57:27 GMT

DNIPRO, Ukraine (AP) — The horrors of war arrive through the night at a hospital in eastern Ukraine, a procession of stretchers bearing limp bodies whisked from the front line. The soldiers come with bandaged limbs soaked in blood, faces blackened with shrapnel fragments and stunned eyes fixed on the ceiling, frozen in shock. Lately, they’ve been coming with ever-greater frequency.“Pain!” shrieks a serviceman with a gaping thigh wound as medical workers move him to a surgical gurney.Evacuated from trenches in the east, forests in the north and the open fields of the south, wounded soldiers begin showing up at the Mechnikov Hospital in late afternoon, and dozens more in desperate need of surgery are wheeled in before the sun rises the next day.The surge of wounded soldiers coincides with the major counteroffensive Ukraine launched in June to try to recapture its land, nearly one-fifth of which is now under Russian control. Surgeons at Mechnikov are busier now than perhaps at any other...

Belgium’s 'newest resto' flies the flag for environmentalism

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:57:27 GMT

It’s (probably) the newest restaurant to open in Belgium – and it’s already set a marker down for its environmental credentials.Tenshi, a fusion of Asian cuisines, is the “new kid on the block” in a smart commercial centre at Rixensart, which is located very close to the delightful Genval lake in Brabant Walloon. For those living in Brussels the whole area makes for a lovely day out this summer and it is easily accessible, being located just off the Brussels Ring. The restaurant opened just a month ago and is, in fact, the latest in a mini “chain” (the others are located in Uccle, Woluwe St Pierre, Brussels Docks and Charleroi). It is the same “family” of restaurants as Thai Café which may be familiar to readers and which also has a branch on the same site in Rixensart. The owners deserve plaudits not just for the lovely food served here but also for the efforts they are making to rid society of potentially damaging plastics. They are taking concrete action to replace plastic wherev...

Carroll’s 2-run triple in the 8th rallies Diamondbacks past Cardinals 3-1 to snap a 5-game skid

PHOENIX (AP) — Pinch-hitter Corbin Carroll’s two-run triple capped a three-run rally in the eighth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 on Tuesday night to snap a five-game losing streak.Arizona rallied late to win for just the third time in 11 games since the All-Star break.Trailing 1-0, Arizona tied it in the eighth off JoJo Romero (2-1), who had retired the side in order in the seventh in relief of Steven Matz. Ketel Marte led off with a triple to the gap in left-center and scored when Jake McCarthy punched a single up the middle through St. Louis’ drawn-in infield. Chris Stratton relieved and retired two batters but walked pinch-hitter Dominic Canzone before Carroll, batting for Emmanuel Rivera, drove one to the center-field wall, where Dylan Carlson could not make the play.“I think that one meant a little more,” said Carroll, who was getting a day off until the eighth. “We got a lot of guys that are grinding right now. Just to put one in th...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Pitcher Ken Waldichuk grew up around Bay Area baseball, so he knows how much fans here stand behind their beloved teams. On Tuesday night during San Francisco’s 2-1 win, supporters of the big-spending Giants rallied around the small-budget Oakland Athletics and both sides stood tall to hold a joint protest and exhibit a rare moment of solidarity between the rivals.Wearing Oakland green and gold and Giants orange and black, thousands of fans joined together to fight the A’s planned move to Las Vegas.“It’s definitely kind of crazy, pretty loud, just a lot of energy,” A’s left-hander Waldichuk said. “They’re definitely passionate. I grew up, my parents were from the Bay Area, so I’ve known how passionate they’ve been in the past as well. I think they’re pretty great fans.”And they were heard — again. In other baseball cities, fans paid attention to the efforts Tuesday and urged each other on social media to do somethi...

NatWest bank chief quits over Nigel Farage ‘debanking’ saga

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:57:27 GMT

LONDON — NatWest Chief Executive Alison Rose stepped down in the early hours of Wednesday morning, after she confessed to being the source for an inaccurate BBC story about why Nigel Farage was dropped as a client by NatWest-owned Coutts bank.Rose fell on her sword in a late-night summit of the bank’s board — less than eight hours after it pledged “full confidence” in her — when she lost the support of Downing Street and the Treasury. Farage’s account with Coutts was closed earlier this year, and internal bank documents show his political views were a factor.Rose admitted she was the source of the BBC story on Tuesday afternoon, after which the board said it had “full confidence” in her. But she faced pressure to resign, with the Sun reporting Chancellor Jeremy Hunt had “serious concerns” over her handling of the “debanking” controversy, and the Times reporting Number 10 wanted her to quit. NatWest later said that Rose had “agreed by m...
